Autogas: Powering Schools into the Future
Oct 18, 2022
Propane is commonly used to heat homes and dry crops, but another use of the alternative fuel is growing in popularity: powering fleets, in particular school buses. Propane powered school buses have a long history, however with recent resources dedicated to expanding this option, school transportation departments are looking closely at making a transition from diesel to propane for their bus fleets. Helping to lead the discussion is Sunrise Cooperative and our team of Energy Solutions Advisors.
“Transitioning your bus fleet to Autogas helps your school move to a cleaner-burning fuel that helps leave a cleaner footprint in your community, especially for the students riding the bus,” said Peter Mainzer, Sunrise Energy Solutions Advisor. “It is a great avenue that is affordable and low maintenance.”
Propane Autogas, or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), is used as a fuel in internal combustion engines in vehicles as well as in stationary applications such as generators. It is a mixture of propane and butane. Autogas is widely used as a "green" fuel, as its use reduces CO 2 exhaust emissions.
When considering propane buses keep the following in mind:

When considering propane buses keep the following in mind:
- It is nearly half the price of diesel fuel.
- Contract your fuel needs easily.
- Quickly start and heat in the winter months.
- Cleaner engines.
- Greener fuel with less emissions.
- Easy maintenance.
- Better acceleration
- Meets all 2024 EPA Requirements
- No required permits for propane equipment
- A higher level of driver and rider comfort.
